vallis_clausa_fontaine_de_vaucluse.jpgThe exceptional site of “Vallis clausa”, the Closed Valley – the cliff at the base of which the mysterious Sorgue river gushes forth – has given its name to the village and to the county of Vaucluse.

Fontaine de Vaucluse is a very special site which draws many visitors. A short walk in the green canyon takes you to the base of the high cliff, which is the source of the most beautiful river in the county – the Sorgue de Vaucluse, just a few hundred meters from the picturesque village of Fontaine de Vaucluse. A cool and quiet spring in the winter and summer, the waters churn and gush after heavy rain, most often in the spring and fall. Total average flow of 630 million cubic meters per year – the biggest spring in Europe and one of the biggest in the world with respect to water flow. The river comes from an immense underground network whose source has not yet been found. An intensely beautiful natural site, which has inspired poets and writers, including Petrarch, Boccace, Chateaubriand, Frédéric Mistral and René Char.la_fontaine_de_vaucluse.jpg
