L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, was originally a small fishing village built on stilts in the middle of the river waters. During the Middle Ages, the town was an island, surrounded by swampy land and the changing river. Canals were dug and the land was gradually dried, recovering additional space for the village to grow. Many canals flow through the town, affectionately nicknamed the Venice of the Comtat.
