Carpentras offers visitors as many different facets as it does colourful façades in the historical city centre. An early city of the Gauls, inhabited by the Memini tribe, Carpentras was both an acropolis and a market town. In the Middle Ages, Carpentras was the capital of the Comtat Venaissin. It belonged to the Holy See from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Architecture is inspired by the Italian style, and by the presence of the Jews, who lived here under Papal protection.
