Caumont sur Durance lies 15 kilometres from Avignon in the direction of Apt. Caumont sur Durance gets its name from what was once a major outpost on the Durance river, watched over by an oppidum for centuries - Bonpas. The Charterhouse of Bonpas was founded here in the mid 12th century. Caumont is located 1 km from the Charterhouse, and still has the vestiges of rich Gallo-Roman homes and other monuments, including the Saint Symphorien chapel, a registered historical monument and beautiful example of the 12th-century Romanesque Provençal style. Caumont is also home to a magnificent pleasure pool, unique in Gaul, in the heart of a restored 12-hectare Roman garden.
Caumont sur Durance was a major growing area for the madderwort crop, which was the source of prosperity in the Comtat Venaissin until the 19th century.
