Oppède has the particular feature of being made up of two villages, both of which were the chief town for the canton in their time. There is Oppède le Vieux on high, and in the plain there is the hamlet of Les Poulivets.

The old château in Oppède-le-Vieux, which crowns the rocky outcrop on which the village was built, was abandoned in the 17th century. Little by little, the people left the craggy homes and moved into the plains. In 1909, the Town Hall was transferred to the hamlet of Les Poulivets.

During the 20^th century, the old village fell into ruin, and vegetation invaded the stone homes and took back over. It was only after World War II that some homes began to be restored, and people started moving back into the beautiful old village.
