Very characteristic of the closed valley of Vaucluse, this area takes you back to the geology of one hundred and twenty million years past. Here too, you can travel along the extraordinary Plague Wall, built in just one hundred days to protect the area from the terrible plague.
Description of the circuit Take the “Chemin des Esperelles” just opposite the school. Follow the local trail (yellow-red) to the Chante-Perdrix signpost. From there, follow the GR 6 trail (white-red) to the signpost called “le Mur de la Peste”. Go along the Mur de la Peste (Plague Wall). This wall was built under order from the Vice-Legate of the Pope, who in 1721 decided to build this 27-lm wall to protect the Comtat Venaissin from the spreading plague. All along there are little towers and shelters which the soldiers used while patrolling the wall. Continue on to another post “La Citerne”. Then, continue on the GR 6 trail in the direction of Fontaine de Vaucluse and the Valette signpost. Continue on following the yellow marking, and reach the Bastide rouge post, take the direction of Lagnes, on the Monts de Vaucluse local trail (yellow-red).Be sure to visit the village of Lagnes, then back to the parking lot.Note: the Drystone association in Vaucluse has worked on restoring the outstanding historical and architectural heritage of the Plague Wall.
